Home is Where the Future is: How a Forest Nursery Keeps Local Youth Thriving

KETAPANG, WEST KALIMANTAN (2026) — For many young women graduating from high school in remote villages, leaving home for distant cities often felt like the only way to earn a living. But the presence of PT Mayawana Persada’s nursery in Simpang Hulu District, Ketapang, is gently rewriting that narrative.

Moving to the city is no longer the default dream. The chance to build financial independence, save for the future, and realize personal goals has opened up right in their home villages, without having to say goodbye to family.

Mariati (21), affectionately known as Ema from Sekucing Labai Village, recalls her journey. After graduating from vocational high school in 2023, she tried her luck working at a cafe in the district capital for eight months. But when she heard about openings at PT Mayawana Persada’s nursery, she didn't hesitate to come home.

"Back when I worked at the cafe, my whole wage went into daily meals and living expenses. Since working here, I was able to buy a motorcycle on credit, a piece of jewelry, and a new phone. It’s so much better working here—I’m close to my parents, and it gives us real hope," Ema shares with a warm smile.

A similar sentiment comes from Agnes (19), a resident of Kualan Hilir Village. Before joining the nursery six months ago, Agnes worked at a retail store in the sub-district town.

"Working in town means your salary is gone just paying for rent and food. Working here allows me to save much more because I live at home, so the rest goes into savings for my future," says Agnes, the second of three siblings.

For Ema, Agnes, and many other young women in Simpang Hulu, PT Mayawana Persada offers peace of mind. They no longer have to face the uncertainty of city life just to get by. Right in their birthplace, they can build a career, secure their future, and stay surrounded by the warmth of home.
